Hi there! My name is Amanda Cullison and I am a certified survival swim instructor under the Survival Swim Development Network. I have been married to my supportive husband, Brian, for over seven years. We have two sweet boys, ages 3 and 5, who keep us busy playing baseball and swimming. I have been a certified occupational therapy assistant for almost twelve years, working predominantly with the geriatric population. Although I’ve spent most of my occupational therapy career working in a nursing home setting, I have been lucky enough to also work in a pediatric sensory integration clinic. My desire to help others spans across all ages.
I have always had a passion for physical fitness and swimming, so when I enrolled my oldest son, Bode, in a preschool with indoor swim lessons, I was ecstatic! Soon after Bode turned three, I learned about the fatal drowning of Levi Hughes while vacationing in Fort Morgan, AL. My family had just vacationed in this remote location nine months prior. Levi was the same age as my Bode. Following Levi’s tragedy, I developed a friendship with Levi’s mother, Nicole. She educated me on the startling statistics of childhood drownings, including the fact that nearly 80% of fatal drownings that occur are males (cdc.gov). I had just given birth to my second son, Archer, and I was on a mission to help save lives! I wanted to educate parents on swim safety and help prevent childhood drownings. With all good intentions, using only my voice was not enough. I needed to get into action. With the encouragement of my children’s preschool and Nicole Hughes, I started my journey to train and teach survival swim lessons. I researched several survival swim training options, but eventually decided Survival Swim Development Network (SSDN) was the perfect fit me. This program has taught me that through survival swim instruction, we really can help save lives, one child at a time. In addition to my survival swim instructor certification, I am certified in lifeguarding with CPR/AED for professional rescuers and first aid. I look forward to the opportunity to give your child the skills necessary to be safe and confident in the water. Check us out at survivalswim.net for more
For an infant, survival swimming is a baby’s ability to float and breathe regardless of the water’s depth, for an indefinite period of time.
For a toddler or young child, survival swimming is the child’s ability to kick and propel through the water – roll on to his/her back to breathe – turn and swim repeatedly to the wall, steps or egress, and get out of the pool. (survivalswim.net)
The most essential survival swimming skill we will teach your child is to roll from a face-down position in the water to a face-up independent back float. If your child falls face down into the water, knowing how to roll onto a face-up back float can save their life.During our lessons, your child will gently be introduced to the water by the instructor. The instructor will work with your child to guide him/her through the lesson process and build a level of trust and comfort in the water.Once this is established, infants who are not walking will begin to learn how to roll-back-to-float. Children who are walking will begin the process of learning to swim-float-swim. They first learn to hold their breath underwater and propel for a short distance on their tummies by kicking their feet. Next, they learn to roll over and float on their backs to breathe, then flip back onto their tummies and swim again. (survivalswim.net)
Swim Float Survive℠ is amazing to watch – infants and children are transformed from being totally helpless in the water into confident, capable swimmers in weeks, not years. The added benefit of increased self-esteem and independence in children while bringing relief and confidence to parents, not just meeting their expectations, but exceeding them, brings Swim Float Survive℠ great satisfaction. Teaching children to save their lives in the water is our number one priority.
Swim Float Survive℠ lessons are the best way to teach your baby or young child to rescue himself in an aquatic emergency. (survivalswim.net)
